Some of Churchill’s early work wouldn’t pass muster today ... but it’s ok he won the War
This country (some of it) does seem to go a bit doolally over Mandela though.
Probably a good thing for some government ministers who would have been Young Conservatives when he was in jail that there was no social media in those days though.

If this programme had been shown on ITV the results would have been different.

Turing was brillaint and the Bombe was very helpful in WWII it was a one trick pony. The guy who really lost out was Tommy Flowers who designed and built Collossus, the first digital, programmable computer on the planet and they helped loads more in the war effort. When the was was over he went back to work for the Post Office designing telephone exchanges and was not allowed to use his knowledge because of the Offiicial Secrets Act.

Turing was a brilliant mathematician and produced the goods under the pressure that war brings, so he wasn't a bad choice as winner. His suicide probably got the sympathy vote too. But for me Einstein is the 20th century individual that history will remember longest. OK so he was a self-publicist and didn't agree with quantum mechanics, and to some extent he (like Turing) used previous work of others. But his ideas were so radical at the time that it was a century before some of them could be proven experimentally, and they had a profound effect on our knowledge of the universe. So Albert, you're my number one.
